Craig Hanway RA

Associate

“Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.” – Frank Gehry

Craig grew up in a Midwest college town, the son of a professor. His course toward a career in architecture was set early, when his family spent several years living in Vienna, and he was exposed to the great cities of Europe. He majored in Architecture at Iowa State University (with a minor in English Literature) and later earned a Master of Business Administration.

Craig has had a varied and general practice, mostly in Seattle. In his early years, he gained experience in hotel/restaurant, hospital/medical, airport/transportation, office space planning, and commercial and residential projects.  He eventually established his own practice, Comprehensive Architecture, with clients of various project types. They included Children’s Hospital, Everett Clinic, Port of Seattle, Consolidated Restaurants, Restaurants Unlimited, and First Interstate Bank, to name a few. His practice also included church projects, preschools, and private residences. Craig has experience in all aspects of architecture, from programming and master planning to design, construction documents, and construction administration.

For many years, Craig has been active in community affairs. He has served on numerous City of Seattle and neighborhood planning and design committees. Craig chaired the Queen Anne Community Council Land Use and Planning Committee; he was a community representative on the Seattle Waterfront Committee; he served on Urban Design Framework Committees for Uptown and South Lake Union Urban Centers and was a Steering Committee member for Leadership for Great Neighborhoods. He was active on the Mercer Corridor Stakeholders Group, the Uptown/SLU Visioning Task Force, and the Uptown/SLU Mobility Plan Task Force.

As one of the firm’s project managers, Craig is working on multiple projects for Seattle Public Schools, Edmonds School District, Tacoma Public Schools, and King County DNRP. Craig enjoys theatre, jazz, classical music, and movies. He and his wife Kathy love travelling and spending time with their adult children.
