Richard Murakami worked closely with NHAW to prepare a facility design program, conduct a site selection analysis, develop a concept design for the facility, and develop the overall project budget.
The design concept evolved from a charrette hosted by NHAW. Community members worked in teams through an interactive development exercise to create alternative concepts. Richard led a collaborative team for the design for the first phase of the project, which involved the renovations of the historic Japanese Language School for its continued use as a language school as well as the wide variety of programs the JCCCW offers. The main entries on the historic south façade of the building were renovated to reflect the open and welcoming character of the original building, as were the main corridors and stairwells. Classrooms and corridors received upgraded lighting, while the main meeting rooms were returned to their original state to the extent possible.
In addition to its continued use as a Japanese Language School, the 17,103 sf renovated facility also serves as a community gathering space celebrating Japanese and Japanese-American culture. It facilitates the passing of traditions from generation to generation.
