Community & Senior Center
City of Pacific
Richard Murakami, while with his own firm, designed this 6,483 sf renovation of the Community and Senior Center. The project introduced a modern kitchen dedicated to serving senior meals, alongside comprehensive facility upgrades such as gymnasium enhancements, modernized restrooms, new program rooms, and reconfigured administrative offices.
During the design phase, the community suffered a profound loss when a young local advocate was tragically shot and killed at the center. In response, the mayor pledged to rebuild a popular wing of the facility through donations, creating a dedicated, safe haven for youth to gather in the young man's honor. Richard immediately stepped forward, donating his professional services to develop the concept and architectural renderings for this new memorial addition. Through this process, he strategically realigned the design approach to maximize the facility improvements funded by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). Concurrent with the building renovation, Richard also facilitated a vital community visioning process to establish a comprehensive Civic Center Master Plan, delivering a definitive road map to guide all future development on the site.
