Community & Senior Center

Richard Murakami, while with his own architectural firm, designed this 6,483 sf renovation of the Community and Senior Center. The renovation includes a new kitchen providing senior meals, and various other building upgrades, including gymnasium improvements, restroom improvements, adding program rooms, and office reconfiguration.
During the design process, a young man active in the community was tragically shot and killed at the Center. The mayor vowed to rebuild the popular wing through donations in honor of the young man so youth could have a safe place to gather. Richard donated services to develop a concept and rendering for the new addition and in the process, restrategized the approach to address the improvements funded by the CDBG grant.
Occurring concurrently with the building renovation, Richard assisted with a visioning process to develop a Master Plan for the Civic Center, which provided the road map for future development of the site.
